Replica

'Replica' is an expression of Maison Martin Margiela's continuous questioning of the use and function of a garment and more broadly, of the Maison's creative process. Preserving the authenticity and the charm of pieces discovered in flea markets around the world, a 'Replica' capsule is presented each season with garments faithfully reproduced with a special tag detailing its origin, its function and its era. Today, the Maison expands on this unique concept with a collection of three feminine fragrances. The three fragrances instantly evoke images, impressions... Positive emotions that reflect our personal memories as much as our collective subconscious. With a silhouette inspired by classical apothecary jars, the bottle used for the three fragrances fits perfectly within the codes of Maison Martin Margiela. A cotton label, resembling the tags used on clothing and accessories for the 'Replica' capsule collection, identifies each fragrance. The same label concept is reproduced onto the packaging. Here, the label is associated with a photograph, a fleeting moment captured in muted colours and soft light.

The VICE Guide To The 2012 London Olympics

VICE takes an in-depth look at the British public's reaction to The Games in London and the negative impact it's having on certain people's lives.

One thing that's great about the Olympics is all the fabulous regeneration in East London. We went to meet all the lucky locals, such as the residents of the Carpenter's Estate, who have been evicted from their homes to make way for the Games. Some of them even got moved to Stoke! Lucky them. Marginally more hyped about the whole thing are the competitors in the Boris Johnson themed "wiff-waff" tournament (that's ping-pong to you, me, and everyone besides Boris).

You know what East London's always been missing? Temporary military installations! Luckily the government have been tooling-up and flooding the area with troops armed with all sorts of massive weaponry. In part 2 we meet the founder of the Design Museum, Stephen Bayley, whose aesthetic sensibility compels him to destroy a lot of Olympic merchandise.

The 2012 London Olympics have been billed as "The Greenest Games the World Has Ever Seen," but, well, it's not as simple as that. In part 3, we take a look at the claims corporate sponsors are using as a PR stunt to cover up their checkered environmental and humanitarian pasts. Meanwhile, a monster has been spotted eating birds in the River Lea. We call in a cryptozoologist to investigate.

It's not just politicians, capitalists, sportsmen, and protestors who are obsessed with the Olympics. Pornographers, gangsters, and alien conspiracy theorists are pretty excited about it too.

Bottega Veneta Art of Collaboration Fall-Winter 2012/2013 with Erwin Olaf

Campaign: F/W 2012-2013
Photographer: Erwin Olaf
Location: Studio, Amsterdam
Notes: Erwin Olaf is an internationally renowned photographer celebrated for his art and commercial work. With a background in journalism and a keen sense of historical context, he uses a stylized visual vocabulary to explore emotions and psychological states that lie beneath the surface. Olaf's formal precision and conceptual inventiveness led Bottega Veneta Creative Director Tomas Maier to approach him for the Fall/Winter 2012-2013 collection, which centers on a silhouette of strict precision and meticulously calibrated proportions. "Erwin perfectly captured the sensibility of the collection," says Tomas Maier. "He also added an unexpected narrative that makes the campaign especially rich."

San Giorgio Hotel by Design Hotels

The Design Hotels™ community is large, scattered and often on-the-go. With our Projects we want to create temporal hospitality experiences, or touchdown spots for like-minded people to come together, celebrate, create. As shifting hubs, they will change in flavor and form, but always satisfy the various cravings of travel. San Giorgio Mykonos started its humble beginnings in the ’90s thanks to a successful local fisherman who laid claim to a piece of Paradise Beach. Step into 2012 and the 34-room property has changed hands to the neighboring Paradise Club. Long-time friends of Design Hotels™, proprietors Thomas Heyne and Mario Hertel together with the owner Markos Daktilidis approached the brand to design a new hospitality experience. After its first project on a pristine beach in Tulum, Mexico, Design Hotels™ now brings another dimension of temporary hospitality experience to Europe.

Colombian Devil's Breath

When VICE initially asked me to go down to Colombia to dig into this Scopolamine story, I was pretty excited. I had only a vague understanding of the drug, but the idea of a substance that renders a person incapable of exercising free-will seemed liked a recipe for hilarity and the YouTube hall of fame. I even spent a little time brainstorming the various ways I could transport some of it back to the states and had a pretty good list going of different ways to utilize it on my buddies. The original plan was for me to sample the drug myself to really get an idea of the effect it had on folks. The producer and camera man had flew down to Bogota ahead of me to confirm some meetings and start laying down the groundwork. By the time I arrived a few days later, things had changed dramatically. Their first few days in the country had apparently been such a harrowing montage of freaked-out dealers and unimaginable horror stories about Scopolamine that we decided I was absolutely not going to be doing the drug. All elements of humor and novelty were rapidly stripped away during my first few days in town. After meeting only a couple people with firsthand experience, the story took a far darker turn than we ever could have imagined, and the Scopolamine pranks I had originally imagined pulling on my friends seemed beyond naive and absurd. By the time we were wrapping things up and preparing to leave the country, I couldn’’t wait to get as far away from Colombia and that drug as possible. Apologies for a fleeting moment of sincerity, but looking back, I’m pretty proud of the work we did down there. This story, and the people who tell it, truly deserve to be heard. – VICE Correspondent Ryan Duffy

"Vans came to me with a proposal to create a short film that embodied the essence of their brand. The creative exploration and freedom they allowed me was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Pure trust, pure faith, in my abilities as a story-teller / director and as a friend. In creating this piece, it was profound to realize the success of their company, at its core, is based on a similar model they share with everyone they work with. To feel part of a brand, part of a family, part of an authentic creative expression, truly moved me to my core."
