fight for their survival

VBS travels to Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo where the mountain gorillas – 200 of the earth’s last 720 — are in a desperate fight for their survival.

Under pressure from rebel factions in Uganda and the DRC who massacred gorillas because the conservationists were “getting on their nerves,” our guide tracks the remaining apes – by armpit stench and dung – to keep tabs on their health.

Coming of Age

The arrival of Coitus 3 is finally here with a spectacular summer issue.

You Are What You Eat

A series of portraits made by examining the interiors of refrigerators in homes across the United States.

For three years I traveled around the country exploring food issues. The more time I spent speaking and listening to individual stories, the more I began to think about the foods we consume and the effects they have on us as individuals and communities.

An intense curiosity and questions about stewardship led me to begin to make these unconventional portraits. A refrigerator is both a private and a shared space. One person likened the question, “May I photograph the interior of your fridge?” to asking someone to pose nude for the camera.

Each fridge is photographed “as is”. Nothing added, nothing taken away.

These are portraits of the rich and the poor. Vegetarians, Republicans, members of the NRA, those left out, the under appreciated, former soldiers in Hitler’s SS, dreamers, and so much more. We never know the full story of one’s life.

My hope is that we will think deeply about how we care.

How we care for our bodies. How we care for others. And how we care for the land.

You Are What You Eat has traveled to many cities and has been used by universities and community organizations as a catalyst for dialogue about food issues. For more information about bringing the exhibit to your community, please contact me directly.

paysages / process

Pierre Commenge aka Emoc creates knitted using Processing. The application follows deterministic rules where every pixel of the picture is given pictorial qualities from its components in a color space. At the end, the original photography is reworked with more or less transformations depending on some parameters tweaks in the code.

Close and Caring

Furry monsters cuddling, welcoming the viewer to a brand new series of MTV idents from 1 July 2011 – motion design studio Sehsucht of Berlin/Germany has created and animated „Close & Caring“, one of six new MTV idents (duration: 20 sec.). Close & Caring“ conveys a look and feel that equals the warmth and feeling of a hug, as simple as holding hands or sinking under your duvet. Sehsucht created the cute little beasts, developed the story concept, built the vignettes, covered the overall production and post-production (editing, retouching, color-correction, special effects), and created the print templates.

PAS House

Imagine a city of the future where skateboards are used as the primary form of transportation and recreation – in and out of your home. A utopia city for skateboarders would mean that a skateable path, like a ribbon connecting everything together, links each building in an unending ability to keep in motion on your board. The PAS House takes this concept and brings it to life through an architectural project mixing a modern single family home with a skateboard ramp structure – all from an environmentally-driven perspective.
