Shorts On Sundays: A Harlem Poetry Lesson

Life-long friends Bruce Weber and David Bailey collaborate for the first time to capture the spirit and soul of Harlem, New York, in today’s candid short dedicated to the late, revolutionary “bluesologist” Gil Scott-Heron. Similar to Spike Lee’s 1989 movie Do the Right Thing, Weber’s series of vignettes, filmed this summer, take place over a sweltering 24 hours. But while Lee focuses on a street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, A Harlem Poetry Lesson is a study of the historic uptown borough and its cast of characters, such as poet Jeffrey Hollington and landmarks the Apollo Theatre and the Carrie McCracken TRUCE Community Garden. Scott-Heron’s expressive growl adds lyrical tension to the Harlem imagery in the film, which includes excerpts from “Small Talk at 125th and Lenox,” taken from his 1970 debut album of the same name, through to material featured on the poet-musician’s haunting final album from 2010, I’m New Here.

'City Lights' is the final chapter from my "Trilogy of Light" series that began a couple years ago with 'LA Light' and then followed up with 'Nightfall'. It was an nightly adventure that took me to almost every angle of Los Angeles. It was an exercise in patience. A lesson in light. An understanding of what it is to live amongst each other and to understand the system and order of a city, the seemingly complex organics that make it up and the life form that the city truly is. A visualization of sonder. It was a daily jaunt to watch the arterial freeway systems pump car cells through its body and channel them to the capillaric avenues that are our neighborhoods and homes. It was a chance to break away from the 70mph freeway perspective and to observe the sun slip from view and watch the electric dance of nightfall begin. It was challenging. It was frustrating. Definitely dangerous at times. Sometimes it hurt. I was chased. Yelled at. Warned. But the overall context of things learned, people met, things seen, and places discovered over the past three years shaped who I am today. I didn't always love Los Angeles but I learned to and discovered that this city is much more than temperate weather, palm trees, pretty girls, and beaches; to me the true beauty behind the city lies hidden on the other end of a rusted fire escape to a view no one else has seen.
I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my film making career where I will be concentrating on narrative and documentary films.
Thanks for watching, reading, and supporting my films.
Cheers,
Colin

Hyper-Reality: A New Vision of the Future by Keiichi Matsuda — Kickstarter

Keiichi Matsuda (BSc. MArch) is a designer and film-maker. He began working with video during his Masters of Architecture at the Bartlett school (UCL) as a critical tool to understand, construct and represent space. Keiichi's research examines the implications of emerging technologies for human perception and the built environment, focusing on the integration of media into everyday life. He has a multi-disciplinary approach to his work, using a mixture of video, motion graphics, interaction design, and architecture to create vibrant "hyper-real" environments where the distinctions between physical and virtual start to dissolve.

He has presented his films and research internationally, winning awards for design, drawing and filmmaking, and graduated from his MArch with distinction in summer 2010. He is currently self employed, working on commissions and research projects in London and Tokyo.

2013 Movie Trailer Mashup

Why deconstructing a mashup? Because these videos are often perceived as a random mess of pretty images from movie trailers. While that’s absolutely true, there’s an opportunity to explore themes and also pay a few obscure tributes to elements that don’t belong in the video itself but that are generally widespread within pop culture. Sometimes, a collection of random but visually stunning sequences can unite to create its own experience. 6 minutes and 46 seconds… Like Pokemon, let’s see if you were able to catch them all!

Random Acts - The Event

On the fifth day we sailed our frozen island out into the shipping lanes. We counted all the evil things and cast them in an ice-hole. They were only numbers.
On the fourth day we opened high-yield savings accounts. The refugee camps were fast becoming commuter towns encircling the crater. Jets of steam were seen from the tor.
On the third day we left our cars in short stay. The air was pine-fresh. Pebbles nuzzled at our shoes. We began to doubt the alignment of the trackway.
On the second day we shopped. You carried your foot like a dead weight. Some youths got on TV pretending to be trainee customer service assistants.
On the first day the fridge defrosted itself.  Wearing Halloween masks we made love and you said something really evil about a mutual friend.
On the day before the first day we fell into geometry like children. The sky was a chemical peel. We slept alone and restlessly through the shipping news.

Devendra Banhart: Mondo Taurobolium

Animator Galen Pehrson Takes the Folk Star on a Psychotropic Trip Into the Dark Heart of Hollywood

Avant-folk singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart builds upon his stellar collection of video collaborations with a subversive and moody new piece from rising animator and director Galen Pehrson. Conceived in the tradition of Mondo—the 1960s sub-genre associated with exploitation, death and taboo—Mondo Taurobolium uses the eponymous track “Taurobolium” from Banhart’s latest album Mala as a backdrop. The experimental narrative takes dark and existential turns into the murky underbelly of Hollywood fame and finds the duck-like character Mondo at its center, reeling in a state of disillusionment following a wave of torrential success. Mondo’s counterpart is Gale, voiced by cult favorite Rose McGowan as the beaked female lead who accompanies him through back alleys and night crawls of Los Angeles. “I think it’s easier to trust an animal without scrutinizing its actions,” says Pehrson, who has collaborated with Banhart on the cover of his album Cripple Crow and the video to “I Feel Just Like a Child,” and has recently shot a series of enviable commissions from MOCA, Death Grips, James Franco and Talib Kweli. “I think it’s something we learn while watching cartoons when we’re young. There’s often a moral undertone to them—here, it’s same idea just with more mature and complex topics.”

Hand-drawn 2D animation is something of a dying art. What inspires you to stay the course?
Galen Pehrson:
I enjoy drawing and making little worlds. The passion comes from the feeling of seeing a character come to life, or clouds blowing over a landscape. It’s not a passion reserved for animation but for sharing, creating and collaborating.

Is the process quite drawn out and isolating?
GP:
I spend months alone. This piece took four months. I counted something like 2,140 hours. The one day I took off, I ran my car over a boulder.

What animation directors have inspired you lately?
GP:
I recently discovered Sally Cruikshank—a cab driver turned me on to her work and my mind was blown. I feel like we might be kindred spirits.

What themes do you find yourself exploring over and over again?
GP:
I think the biggest theme is nighttime. I work through the night, and there’s a different feeling in the air: a kind of stillness and clarity that I’m grasping at and trying to relay.

Vivienne Westwood Loves

Vivienne Westwood Loves is a celebration of quality and craftsmanship - bringing together British heritage brands that share a passion for traditional production techniques and the preservation of skills already passed down through many generations. Each brand was approached as they epitomise Vivienne's 'Quality over Quantity' and 'Buy less, choose well, make it last' ethos.

The five brands we have chosen to work with are Globe-Trotter, Gloverall, Johnstons of Elgin, Lock & Co. and Pantherella. Using the design heritage and know-how of each brand, we have produced a range of styles which marry Vivienne Westwood's singular vision with the quality and craftsmanship which only decades and in some cases centuries of history can bring to a product.
