Trip to Mexico

I brought my new Blackmagic Cinema Camera with me on a recent trip with my wife to the Bahia de Banderas area of Mexico. We stayed in Mismaloya, about 20km south of Puerto Vallarta. If I had it my way, the camera would have been glued to my hands for the entire trip, but considering it's not water-proof, I had to leave it at the hotel quite a bit.
We did a day trip north of Puerto Vallarta and explored towns, beaches, and did a small jungle hike. In Valle De Banderas, they were celebrating their town's anniversary, or at least I think that's what a banner said. At any rate there were many people out celebrating.

I love shooting with the BMCC! Little issues aside, it is an amazing camera! I love how it makes me slow down while shooting. Considering I'm getting about 25 minutes of raw footage on each 240gb SSD, and the fact that you can't delete clips or format the drive from the camera, makes me feel as if I'm shooting film. On this trip I had no way of downloading footage or formatting the drives. It felt like having an old slr film camera with me and just a couple rolls of film.

I shot all raw and processed the images in Lightroom. I had thought to take Resolve for a spin, but my main workstation stopped working and Resolve won't run on my laptop. I used a calibrated HP monitor.

I experimented with different color grades and you will see different styles in this film. There's even a single random BW shot in there. Uncompressed raw and 13 stops of dynamic range is a powerful mix. Being able to process the raw images in a variety of programs is freeing, and re-processing old footage with new color correction tools is something I look forward to.

Download the original if you want to see the full quality. Not much else to say really. It's good this camera will be shipping in larger quantities soon. Sorry to use an already over used phrase, but this camera is a game changer and needs to be in more people's hands! I can't wait to see what people shoot with it, and what the other camera manufacturers come up with to compete.

P.S. The reality of owning a camera called the Blackmagic Cinema Camera is at times a bit awkward. I'm finding myself saying things like, "No, I'll use the Black Magic." which tends to make strangers in the vicinity raise an eyebrow. Oh well. It's a small price to pay.

COMME DES GARCONS PARFUMS AMAZINGREEN x POSTMATTER.COM DEMO

Comme des Garçons Parfums’ Amazingreen fragrance presents an interactive journey into kaleidoscopic abstraction on POSTmatter.com, the newly launched online extension of the cutting-edge iPad magazine POST. An evocation of the lush exuberance of nature, the non-hierarchical composition of Comme des Garçons’ Amazingreen sees an unorthodox arrangement of green notes such as palm tree and jungle leaves, green pepper and dew mist juxtaposed with industrial notes of silex and gunpowder accord.
Within this sensorial framework, Amazingreen is conceptualised on POSTmatter.com as a psychedelic journey through a dazzlingly green rainforest, in which the individual notes of the fragrance appear as 3D animations which transition through a series of kaleidoscopic filters controlled by the audience’s cursor.
Developed by POST as an interactive HTML 5 component for use online and on tablet devices, the Amazingreen experience sees a sacred geometry of polygons in discourse with the undulating chaos of nature’s rhythms, where speed ramps transports the audience at warp speed to a landscape of vibrating crystalline and irrational cellular life forms.

Open Season in the Holy Land

Over thanksgiving, Israel launched another attack on the Gaza Strip, killing Hamas' second-in-command Ahmed Jabari. In retaliation, Hamas began firing rockets that were some of the first missiles to hit parts of Israel in 20 years. VICE traveled to the Israeli-Gaza border to see what eternal tension had flared up this time.
A $1 billion defense system known as the "Iron Dome" has helped protect Israel from rocket attacks since its installment in 2011. Given the recent upsurge in the Israeli-Hamas conflict, the demand for the Iron Dome as a powerful defensive weapon has intensified. VICE wanted to know if targeting Hamas was an absolute necessity now that Israel was so well defended, so we paid a visit to an Israeli military briefing at the site of the Iron Dome. Afterward, we headed south to watch Israeli soldiers prepare for the apparent ceasefire that was to happen between Israel and Hamas in Egypt.

Once finished it is projected that the 4000 m2 space will play a significant role in Panamanian society, culture and education. Here, one of the museum's exhibit coordinators, Darien Montañes, explains the work involved in bringing a project of this scale to life.

adidas SLVR Spring/Summer 2013 Campaign

The adidas SLVR Spring/Summer 2013 Campaign Video presents the new collection against a raw, make-shift backdrop, inspired by the movie Fight Club.

Bodies in motion tend to stay in motion. It's an age-old principle that is at the heart of the adidas SLVR Spring/Summer 2013 collection inspired by martial arts, Fight Club, and the human physique. Consequently the new campaign presents the collection against a raw, make-shift backdrop.

Photographed by Willy Vanderperre, the campaign depicts group compositions shot against a set in constant flux, continuing an architectural yet loose look. The imagery communicates Dirk Schönberger's high-fashion perspective, combining precision tailoring with a sport attitude.

The campaign extends this idea by presenting a fusion of seemingly opposing references like Hawaiian prints with boxing silhouettes. This clash illustrates the amalgamation of tailoring and sportswear as the core of the SLVR collection.

The Spring/Summer 2013 video translates the concept into motion. Climaxing to silence, the edit uses acceleration of pace and raw distortion effects to merge the various looks into one contrasting edit.

Jimmy's End

A film by Alan Moore & Mitch Jenkins

We've all been there: in the lapses after midnight, stumbling down unfamiliar gutters after one too many for the road and looking for inviting lights before they call last orders. James is trying to lose himself, but in a fractured men's room mirror finds the eyes that have been waiting for him.

Following from the unnerving prelude Act of Faith, Alan Moore and Mitch Jenkins unveil a phantasmagoric English dreamtime made of goosefleshed pin-up girls, burned out comedians and faulty lights, with judgement just behind the tinsel

Jimmy's End pulls back the purple drapes upon an intricate new planet of desire and mystery. We've all been there.

Or it's where we're going.

Divine Proportions

Paris Filmmaker Benjamin Seroussi Reinvents the Golden Ratio

A Vitruvian woman comes to life in Benjamin Seroussi's new fashion short, Divine Proportions, inspired by the disparate environments of a doctor’s office and a model casting session. “I wanted to have a scientific approach to the character,” says the director. “When you have an X-ray, the doctor manipulates all kinds of equipment to take a picture, and when a model goes to a casting, she has to show her profile, hands and teeth.” The idea evolved into an exploration of the body with regards to the Golden Ratio, updating a Renaissance mingling of art and science for a 21st century aesthetic in this piece, which premiered this weekend at Diane Pernet’s A Shaded View on Fashion Film Festival. Seroussi, who studied film at UCLA and has worked with brands including Bulgari, Pierre Hardy and Louis Vuitton, found and even made the various instruments and contraptions that helped to convey his vision of human geometry. Australian "New Face" Lorelle Crawford strikes poses in outfits by designers Maxime Simoens and Alexandre Vauthier behind measuring mirrors built by the French filmmaker, before being enveloped by a halo of light borrowed from Le Deun Luminaires and finally, spinning in a NASA-built orientation device. “I’m always looking for equipment that puts the body in different situations,” he says. “I wanted a girl who wasn’t afraid of going into a gyroscope."

How To Kill a Mustache

So, you've decided to shave your mustache.
It's not as straightforward as you might think.
First off, reconsider. Remember that the mouth brow remains the clearest expression of masculinity a man can have above his waist.
So, give it 24 hours. Do a few things that only a mustached man can do, like investigate a crime, or paint a mustache painting.
Next, let your woman touch your lip rug one last time. Assuming she doesn't like it, make her touch it. Remind her what she'll be missing.
Spend some alone time with your Flavor Savor. Pet him. Tell him a secret.
If, at this point, you're still determined to annihilate your soup strainer, so be it.
Some guys go straight for the razor. That's horseskat. This is a new experience for your face caterpillar, so you've got to be...gentle.
Start with scissors, and slowly cut away a few hairs here and there, speaking reassuringly to your lip blanket.
Once your Cookie Duster understands and accepts what's happening, get it done.
Resist the temptation to indulge in temporary mustache shenanigans.
Now is the time to officially say goodbye to your booger broom. It's normal to cry at this point.
Gather the shorn hairs together, and make a llammastache.
Finally, give your dearly departed dirt squirrel a traditional Viking funeral. Send him to the Nordic Gods of facial hair upon a flaming raft.
As regret inevitably sets in, don't lose heart. Your grief is already nourishing the roots of your next nose neighbor. The cycle of mustache continues.

One Day on Earth

Sexual Chronicles of a French Family

Breakfast time where the awkward silence is sometimes a burden, dinner where everything is discussed except sex, the routine of a contemporary family is disrupted when Romain, the youngest son, is caught masturbating in Biology class, filming the act with his iPhone. He is going to be suspended from school. Romain explains to his mother that it was a dare the other students have amongst themselves, just for fun. He just stupidly got caught. Sex having been a taboo subject in the family up to now, it suddenly becomes the main subject as we become involved in the intimate lives of each element of this family: the parents, the 18, 20 and 22-year-old children, and the grandfather.
