The Wes Anderson Mixtape

Great directors create their own genre and Wes Anderson movies are a genre unto themselves. His films are played out in linear motion, his actors moving like costumed dolls in a vast toy house. It's as much theatre as film. Here are Anderson’s movies remixed like a cross section of a doll’s house - the themes and styles blended and mashed together.

Boyhood, Trailer

A fictional drama made with the same group of actors over a 12-year period from 2002-2013 -- takes a one-of-a-kind trip, at once epic and intimate, through the exhilaration of childhood, the seismic shifts of a modern family and the very passage of time.

The film tracks 6 year-old Mason (Ellar Coltrane) over life's most radically fluctuating decade, through a familiar whirl of family moves, family controversies, faltering marriages, re-marriages, new schools, first loves, lost loves, good times, scary times and a constantly unfolding mix of heartbreak and wonder. But the results are unpredictable, as one moment braids into the next, entwining into a deeply personal experience of the incidents that shape us as we grow up and the ever-changing nature of our lives.

As the story begins, dreamy-eyed grade-schooler Mason faces upheaval: his devoted, struggling single mom Olivia (Patricia Arquette) has decided to move him and older sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater) to Houston -- just as their long-absent father Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) returns from Alaska to re-enter their world. Thus begins life's non-stop flux. Yet through a tide of parents and stepparents, girls, teachers and bosses, dangers, yearnings and creative passions, Mason emerges to head down his own road.

Directed by Richard Linklater.

Cast with Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Tamara Jolaine, Evie Thompson, Lorelei Linklater

Mun Foong, A.K.A Wayward

Originally trained as a graphic designer and having worked in advertising for a number of years, Mun Foong's story is one about childhood interests - cutting up living room curtains to make cloths - to switching careers to follow a passion, even if it means having to teach herself all the skills needed, right from scratch.

Follow us, as Mun Foong tells us about her challenges and inspirations as she puts together a collection for her latest campaign.

OP-light by Bilge Nur Saltik

OP-light is a wall-light series designed by Bilge Nur Saltık. A part of the OP-jects collection, OP-light uses the refraction of light as a tool to create optical illusions. Nur was interested in distortion and how different materials and textures create different patterns through layering. Her aim was to capture the moving pattern that the distorted effect creates.
This light fixture contains multiple layers of textured panels. Each clear geometrical textured panel functions to reflect the light. By rotating these panels, OP-light creates moving light patterns. Playing with density and the angles of the texture enhances the effect of the illusions. When turned-on, OP-light creates continuous magical and playful visual illusions of light.

Queen of the Night: Giovanna Battaglia

A Nocturnal Meander Through New York’s Most Decadent Nightspot with the Italian Fashion Darling

“It’s somewhere between a dream and a nightmare,” explains Giovanna Battaglia of navigating the labyrinth of the Diamond Horseshoe club, the Broadway venue recently resurrected at the Paramount Hotel. The W magazine Contributing Fashion Editor was captured in this voyeuristic short as she played hostess at theatrical ball Queen of the Night during the recent FW14 New York shows. Moonlighting as Creative Director of the immersive event, Battaglia has conjured a world filled with wildly exaggerated Thom Browne-designed costumes and lobster-stuffed steel birdcages by Jennifer Rubell, where unsuspecting spectators are plucked into secret chambers for a solo encounter. “The place smells like cigarettes, sex, perfume, whiskey and church rolled into one,” says Set Designer Douglas Little of the sensory overload. “It’s kind of sinful, classic, decadent and slightly salacious, but it’s there to shake up New York nightlife.” The basement club was first opened in 1938 by Manhattan impresario Billy Rose, and Battaglia is nostalgic for the wayward decadence of the swing-era: “Baz Luhrmann told me the scene in The Great Gatsby when Leonardo Dicaprio is in an underground speakeasy was inspired by the original Diamond Horseshoe,” she says. Here the front row regular gives NOWNESS a quick-fire guide to her quintessential night out.

What's the best party you've ever been to?
Giovanna Batagglia: Dolce & Gabbana’s Venice Alta Moda masked ball. Arriving at the Palazzo with the gondola at night was like something from another era: everybody wearing amazing costumes and masks. The decor was like a 1700 dream.

Slow Life

The most important living organisms that play the key functions in the biosphere might not seem exciting when it comes to motion. Plants, fungi, sponges, corals, plankton, and microorganisms make life on Earth possible and do all the hard biochemical job. Similarly to all living things, they are dynamic, mobile, and fundamentally have the same motion properties as us. They grow, reproduce, spread, move towards source of energy, and away from unfavorable conditions. However, their speeds happen to be out of sync with our narrow perception. Our brains are wired to comprehend and follow fast and dynamic events better, especially those very few that happen at speeds comparable to ours. In a world of blazingly fast predators and escaping prey events where it takes minutes, hours, or days to notice any changes are harder to grasp.
