Lorna Simpson: Momentum

Artist Lorna Simpson conjures a childhood memory for today's pirouette-filled film, currently on view at Salon 94 gallery. Coated in gold body paint and accessorized with matching afros, the ballet corps starring in Momentum comprises a group of New York dancers handpicked by the Brooklyn native to reenact her own stage debut at the age of eleven. "I was very surprised by a powerful sense of reversal while performing," she recalls. "I had this intense urge to occupy the role of observer, as opposed to being immersed in my well-rehearsed effort. I [wanted] to satisfy my need to be the spectator of this performance." Alongside the video installation, two large-scale felt works silk-screened in gold ink and depicting 1970s postcards of New York’s Lincoln Center, the venue of the original performance, are also on show. The pioneering conceptual photographer, who has shown at the Whitney, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and the Walker Art Center, revisits themes of gender, cultural identity and history in her work: a recent series for the Brooklyn Museum saw Simpson recreate vintage 1950s images of African Americans with herself as the subject.

LIVING FASHION - Before the Opening

The Dutch collector Jacoba de Jonge captured and followed before the opening vernissage of the exhibition 'Living Fashion. Women's Daily Wear 1750-1950'.
The exhibition redraws the influence of fashion on the everyday lives of middle-class women in Western Europe between 1750 and 1950, based on historical silhouettes from the extensive apparel collection of Jacoba de Jonge, now almost entirely incorporated in the MoMu collection.

"Each material has its specific characteristics which we must understand if we want to use it... This is no less true of steel and concrete [than of wood, brick, and stone]. We must remember that everything depends on how we use a material, not on the material itself... New Materials are not necessarily superior. Each material is only what we make of it... We must be as familiar with the functions of our buildings as with our materials. We must learn what a building can be, what it should be, and also what it must not be... And just as we acquaint ourselves with materials, just as we must understand functions, so we must become familiar with the psychological and spiritual factors of our day. No cultural activity is possible otherwise; for we are dependent on the spirit of our time."

Rick Genest aka Rico the Zombie - Embrace Everything That Is Different

We are in a huge fabric hall. An exposed and obviously uncommon character sits there on a couch. German photographer Nadine Elfenbein will soon continue taking pictures of him.
He smokes his cigarette while making little tricks with it. Short inflammations illuminate his face releasing skull fragments. It’s a Day of the Dead scenery.
We are here with Rick Genest aka Rico the Zombie.

Could be anyone - trailer

The dispersion of dominance. The dominance over others. The power that "lies" in each one of us. A "costume" we wear and we cannot identify. Our odious visage hides behind the facets of each and every day. Dismantling. With the same ingredients the face can transform. Power is a benefactor. Could be anyone.

In the Desert Sun

The Brooding Actor Directs a Dreamy Short For the Selfridges Film Project

Amidst billowing Ann Demeulemeester fabrics, ballet dancer-turned-model Jamie Bochert stalks mercurially through the sand dunes of the Moroccan desert in boyfriend Michael C. Pitt’s directorial debut, In the Desert Sun. The film sets the dark-eyed, defined beauty of Bochert—who has graced the runway for Missoni, Gaultier, Givenchy and Rodarte—against a haunting guitar-heavy soundtrack. Most recently starring in HBO’s critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire, Pitt made a name for himself in emotionally charged roles for indie stalwarts Gus Van Sant, Larry Clark, Michael Haneke and Asia Argento. Commissioned to celebrate the opening of the Womens Designer Galleries at London department store Selfridges, In the Desert Sun is part of a series of seven unique films by different directors invoking the essence of designers including Dries Van Noten, Gareth Pugh and Rick Owens to be screened in a site-specific installation by artist Simon Costin at the Old Selfridges Hotel. “In http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.giftheir own way, the films are wonderfully idiosyncratic representations of the designers they are representing,” explains the project's curator, Emma Reeves. Each short explores the idea of a strong female character, with Demeulemeester choosing to work with Bochert and her partner Pitt. “The project is not about clothes, it’s about character,” says Selfridges’ Creative Director Alannah Weston. “We wanted each designer to freely express their vision of a woman whom they found captivating and inspiring.

A.F. Vandevorst: Delfine

Director Stef Viaene Unveils His Racy Short for the Selfridges Film Project

Belgian beauty Delfine Bafort writhes sensually along the flanks of a mysterious stallion in director Stef Viaene’s intimate physical study, Delfine. The film sees Bafort—who featured in KT Auleta’s Rainbow Warrior beauty film for NOWNESS last August—channeling the spirit of the bucking bronco against a brooding soundscape by Rafaël Sellekaerts. Commissioned to celebrate the opening of the Womens Designer Galleries at London department store Selfridges, Delfine is part of a series of seven unique shorts by different directors invoking the essence of designers including Dries Van Noten, Gareth Pugh and Rick Owens to be screened in a site-specific installation by artist Simon Costin at the Old Selfridges Hotel. “In their own way, the http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.giffilms are wonderfully idiosyncratic representations of the designers they are representing,” explains the project's curator, Emma Reeves. Each short explores the idea of a strong female character, with husband and wife design team An Vandevorst and Filip Arickx choosing to work with fellow Belgians Viaene and Bafort. “The project is not about clothes, it’s about character,” says Selfridges’ Creative Director Alannah Weston. “We wanted each designer to freely express their vision of a woman whom they found captivating and inspiring.”
