Pull&Bear . The Berliners . Max Von Senger

Next Friday, 7th of June, 2013, Pull&Bear will officially open its first store in Germany, which had been operating exclusively online since September 2011. As to be expected, and since Pull&Bear is closely linked to art culture, Berlin will be the place.
To welcome the city, Pull&Bear launches a series of videos with some local characters who will show us their common vision of the city, while at the same time representing some of the values that underpin the concept of the brand: sport (represented by a bike shop owner), art (represented by an illustrator), social networks (represented by a blogger) and music (represented by some djs who come from a musical radio program). Pull&Bear presents “The Berliners”, giving its welcome to new venture in Germany.

Louis Vuitton presents In the Reflection of the Lens

In this short film directed by KT Auleta and shot in Los Angeles, Louis Vuitton presents the Spring/Summer Sunglasses collection for women. Behind the wheel, the collection is presented in the rear vision mirror of the car navigating different landscapes. Certain models in this collection take their inspiration from the iconic Louis Vuitton trunks and the engraved plates on the temples and metallic studs remind us of these codes.
This film is complimentary to the menswear sunglasses film also shot in Los Angeles, pursuing the male character of the motorbike rider through diverse landscapes as the opposite side of the lens.

Louis Vuitton presents Behind the Lens

Paris may be the ‘city of lights’, yet, Los Angeles could be labeled the city of ‘light’. The natural light in this city is very particular and resonates beautifully on camera. It is thus no accident that the film industry sprung up here and sunglasses are the essential accessory, for celebrities and non-celebrities alike, to reflect the glare of the considerably bright sun rays. In this short film directed by KT Auleta, Louis Vuitton presents the Spring/Summer Sunglasses collection for men. The collection draws its inspiration from the Damier canvas which was created in 1888. It remains timeless thanks to a geometric pattern and simple elegance and whether basking in the bright light of LA or elsewhere, it is an essential accessory this summer.

BLOOD BROTHER :BARON

Contemporary menswear brand, Blood Brother, has collaborated with the erotic paperback publication, Baron, to create a series of printed Tee’s and sweatshirts. Sold exclusively through Oki-Ni online and Selfridges in-store, the collection coincides with the highly anticipated second edition of Baron and will be available to buy in mid May.
The union of Baron with Blood Brother ties in perfectly with the ethos of the label to showcase emerging talent within the fields of photography and art while capturing the uniquely voyeuristic element of the quarterly magazine. The clothing will feature a range of artwork and graphics from a far-flung trio of designers.

These include: Viktor Hachmang. Netherlands based Hachmang - cites 60’s Pyschedelia and 80’s Postmodern as inspiration for his work which often alludes to famous artists and artworks. His contribution, the “Threesome” sweatshirt as well as the “PurpleHeart” and “S&M” T-Shirt, typifies the artist’s penchant for the naive imagery of strict geometry using hand drawn forms.

Tyrone LeBon: Tyrone is a filmmaker and photographer based in London. He came to prominence at the age the 18 after his first film was screened by MTV. He has since worked on numerous film and photography projects shown by a variety of international publications and broadcasters. LeBon’s contribution to the collection features artwork that will be in the next issue of the magazine. The “Tyrone LeBon for Baron” Tee’s will available as part of a limited edition.

Visual artist, Eva Stenram, sees photography as a medium of inconstancy and transformation. Incorporating digitally manipulated photographs, found photographs and images from the Internet, her work comments on our complex relationship with the photographic image, our relationship with surveillance culture and our relationship with privacy. Stenram seeks to unsettle the original functions of our society’s familiar photographic genres. Stenram has exhibited internationally, most notably at the V&A (London) and the Zendai Museum of Modern Art (China). In 2012 she was nominated for the Les Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award and has been selected as one of ten finalists in the Hyeres International Photography Competition 2013. Eva has created three garments for the collection. Her “ZombieBride” artwork will be adorned on both t-shirts and sweat shirts
Prices range from £40 for Tees to £85 for Sweatshirts.

THIS IS ERIC KOSTON

Desillusion magazine, supported by Nike are proud to present their latest video “This is Eric Koston”, a video portrait that pays tribute to the Legendary street skateboarder, Eric Koston. As one traces the evolution of modern street skating from its earliest foundation to the unbelievable heights to which it has risen, Eric Koston has served as a constant innovator each step of the way. Since turning pro in 1992, Eric Koston has remained unfadeable in a cut-throat contest capacity as well as on the raw street level that prides itself in taking no shorts, all while never seeming to take any of it all that seriously. The wheels are always in motion, even when off his board, as Koston has helped advance innovation in skateboarding through his dedicated approach to footwear design (his creativity has yielded several classic skate shoes already) and by co-founding The Berrics with long-time pal and former roommate, Steve Berra.

The Act of Killing

Release: 19 July 2013
In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), the filmmakers examine a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes, challenging them to reenact their real-life mass killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Shaking audiences at the 2012 Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals, The Act of Killing is an unprecedented film and, according to the Los Angeles Times, "could well change how you view the documentary form."

Never Seen Burnham

A painting becomes a video, a landscape becomes a portrait. I tried to see through his eyes. A collaboration with painter Anthony Garratt, recorded entirely in his Bristol studio. I wanted to a make a piece about a place I had never been so I worked with Anthony recording his process of making a painting of Burnham on Sea lighthouse - a place I have never been. The work consists of his three responses to the location: painting his subjective vision, his interview responses to the questions I asked while he painted and the music that his visits to Burnham had inspired him to improvise.
His generosity allowed me to create a representation of this place constructed entirely through someone else's filters. I used his responses to the landscape to create a portrait of him.

Shorts on Sundays: And After All

Shorts on Sundays: And After All Our Director-Showcasing Series Continues With Stellar New Work Submitted Via Open Call

Rising star Annabelle Dexter-Jones takes a soul searching trip back to her character’s small-town past in Julian Ungano’s And After All, the first premiere chosen from our Short on Sundays open call via NOWNESS’ Vimeo page. Selected from over 200 submissions, the film throws the seemingly glamorous Manhattan art world into sharp relief when Jones’ protagonist is faced with real loss, forcing her to travel to a world she thought she had left behind—and rekindle a relationship in the process. “I lost my father when I was 15, and had been trying to put something together inspired by that,” explains Ungano of this deeply personal project, which stars a handful of New York scenesters including Byrdie Bell, Victor Kubicek and Heidi Mount. “Then sometime around Christmas in 2011 I lost my mother quite suddenly and I sort of rearranged things and was to able write the first version of the script in a couple days.” Ungano and his collaborator on the project, Tommy Agriodimas, met while students at the Pratt Institute and have since shot for clients including The New York Times, Elle, Ralph Lauren and Nike as well as DJing regularly around town and putting out their own publication, La Lutte Continue. Inspired by cinema verité, the camera work for their newest film draws the viewer into the experience of Dexter-Jones’ character. “I knew almost instantly that she was the right person,” says Ungano of casting the Manhattan-raised actress, daughter of Foreigner’s Mick Jones, sister of producer Mark Ronson, and muse to the likes of Leos Carax, Aaron Rose and André Saraiva. “She can appear supremely confident and then you blink your eyes and refocus them on her and she looks completely vulnerable.” We reached out to cast members Bell, Kubicek and star Dexter-Jones for their reflections on working with the industrious duo.

Annabelle Dexter-Jones

What was cool was that there was something very personal about the project. It had a lot to do with Julian's life, and when we were shooting we stayed in his house in Vermont where he grew up. I found that very helpful for me. I felt like Julian let me into this very intimate and sacred part of his life growing up.

Byrdie Bell

I love working with Julian and Tommy because they are both uniquely talented but also compliment each other in a way that brings their voices to another level. I remember, specifically, on set when there were some lighting issues in the club scene Tommy so insightfully put Julian at ease by pointing out the narrative parallels illustrated by the juxtaposition of the cramped dark city scenes to the wide open Vermont landscape. That's my favorite part of the film—when we are viewers can breathe with Charlotte.

Victor Kubicek

Julian and Tommy were confident and quick, young filmmakers who weren't too cautious and sluggish. They're very visually sensitive and were obsessed with setting up shots, so they let us do our thing. We had good fun. I know Annabelle, who was in it too, so we were able to goof around. Shooting over three days in the fall in New York City, some of the scenes were in Bungalow 8—but in the middle of the day!

Fruitvale Station, trailer

This is the true story of Oscar, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air. Not sure what it is, he takes it as a sign to get a head start on his resolutions: being a better son to his mother, whose birthday falls on New Year's Eve, being a better partner to his girlfriend, who he hasn't been completely honest with as of late, and being a better father to T, their beautiful 4 year old daughter. He starts out well, but as the day goes on, he realizes that change is not going to come easy. He crosses paths with friends, family, and strangers, each exchange showing us that there is much more to Oscar than meets the eye. But it would be his final encounter of the day, with police officers at the Fruitvale BART station that would shake the Bay Area to its very core, and cause the entire nation to be witnesses to the story of Oscar Grant.

The Rhino Stamp Project

A campaign designed to invade borders. There are 29000 rhinos left in the world. South Africa is home to 75% of them.
Their horns sell on the black market for more than $60000 per kilogram, to be ground and used as a hypothetical cure for cancer or a vitality tonic for the wealthy.
South Africa faces a massive challenge, an almost impossible one, in protecting one of our national symbols, one of our big five.
Despite abundant petitions and awareness campaigns, the numbers of our rhinos killed continue to soar. We needed to find a way to talk directly to those responsible for creating the demand and show them what they were doing.
So we reinvented age-old postage stamps and turned them into our new medium.
But they aren’t ordinary stamps. The usual breathtaking imagery of our animals has been replaced by the carnage that poachers leave behind. Each stamp includes a message in Chinese, Vietnamese or Thai reading: “say no to rhino horn.”
Letters with our stamps on them, will not only be sent straight to the perpetrators, but will also speak directly to them.
We created a way to take the fight out of our vast bushveld and put it in the hands of those who are ultimately responsible.
We then used our stamps to create posters that will be put up countrywide, rallying the South Africa public to attach one to all letters leaving our shores for China, Vietnam or Thailand. We have also created stamp booklets that will handed out used as inserts and direct mailers, making sure that each and every stamp sent becomes a direct mailer from us to them.
We hope this campaign will start a serious conversation and will continue to do so during it’s roll out and so that we’ll see less of our rhinos being killed. The only way to end the slaughter is to end the demand.

Space Oddity

A revised version of David Bowie's Space Oddity, recorded by Commander Chris Hadfield on board the International Space Station.

Sally Silverstone & Linda Leigh - Biosphere 2

Over twenty years ago, a group of scientists, entrepreneurs, philosophers, and free-thinkers put their minds and resources together to create a singular and lasting testament to an unfashionable notion: science and exploration, having become hyper-specialized and incremental, needed a return to big ideas and leaps of faith. They wanted to explore what few were discussing at the time. Things like climate change. Space colonization. And they were going to explore these ideas in a three-acre geodesic living laboratory called Biosphere 2 that mimicked the biomes of the earth. Between 1987 and 1991, they built it from scratch, a veritable ark in the American desert. Eight people sealed themselves inside for two years, harvesting all their food, producing most of their oxygen, and recycling all of their waste. It was a remarkable experiment. And yet the one variable they did not account for was perhaps the most obvious: themselves. Personal and professional infighting, a catastrophic lack of concerted PR, and existential confusion all played a part in writing what is ultimately a tragic tale. Sally Silverstone was the project’s farm manager and crew co-captain during the inaugural – and only full-term – mission. Linda Leigh was the terrestrial wilderness manager. This is both their story, and the story of what Biosphere 2 means for a world where climate change and one-way missions to Mars are no longer newspaper novelties. This is a small movie about a big idea, and two women who helped, and are still helping, to keep it alive.

Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals - Jah Work: A Lewis Marnell Tribute

Ben Harper is helping to raise money for the family of Australian pro skateboarder Lewis Marnell, whose untimely death in January at the age of 30 left his family in dire financial straits. A lifelong skateboarding enthusiast and friend to skaters around the world, Harper has reunited with the Innocent Criminals for the first time since 2007 to re-record the song "Jah Work" from his 1997 album, "The Will to Live." The song is now available on iTunes, with all proceeds going to the Lewis Marnell family memorial fund.

"Lewis was a brilliant artist and athlete not to mention a truly beautiful soul. We loved him and his contributions to skating, and we thought a song would be a wonderful way to celebrate his life and help his family." said Harper.

Marnell died Jan. 18 from complications of diabetes, a disease he lived with from the age of 10. He did not allow his condition to impede his meteoric skateboarding career. He skated with such passion and style that can't be replicated, he made all his tricks look effortless and his love for life was infectious. In 2008 he made his mark when he went pro for Almost Skateboards and he was named Skater of the Year from Australian skateboarding magazine slam. Marnell got married in late 2012, and died only a few months later, leaving his family with a large debt. Global efforts to help the family financially ensued, with Harper's being the latest.

All proceeds go the family of Lewis Marnell

Kahlil Joseph's Film Meditates on the Origins of an All-Black Rodeo in Oklahoma

A dreamlike narrative binds cowboy and an angelic specter clad in white in director Kahlil Joseph's exploration of a little-known African-American rodeo subculture. Joseph, who is part of the Los Angeles-based What Matters Most film collective, visited the annual August rodeo in the sparsely populated Oklahoma town of Grayson (previously Wildcat), an event that attracts African-American bull riders, barrel racers and cowgirls from all over the Midwest and southern USA. He set out to celebrate the origins of the rodeo by paying respect to the spirit of Aunt Janet, a member of the family who founded the event, passed away last year and is embodied as the young girl in the film. “Black people are light years more advanced than the ideas and images that circulate would have you believe. The spaces we control and exist are my ground zero for filming, at least so far, and there are opportunities for me to tap into the energy,” says Joseph who has also made films for musicians including Shabazz Palaces and Seu Jorge. “So an all-black town with an all-black rodeo in the American heartland was a kind of vortex or portal through which I could actually show this.” Wildcat is scored by experimental musician Flying Lotus, who has previously collaborated with Joseph on a short to accompany his 2012 album Until the Quiet Comes, which is showing during Sundance London this weekend.

The West is Dead - Our Story

We put this video together from footage dating back to when we first started our company. Included are shots from West Glacier, Montana and various locations around California where we make all of our clothes. The last portion of the video shows us making a vintage-style patch using our Cornely model "A" manual chain stitch embroidery machine. The machine is around 100 years old and must be operated freehand with no way to "erase" your mistakes. It served as the inspiration for our logo and the embroidery on the inside waistband of our jeans; one of the many details adding to the story behind each of our garments.
