Tim Coppens 2012 SS

Tim Coppens was born in Belgium and graduated from the internationally acclaimed Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1998.

After graduating, he moved to Munich to design for Bogner. In 2004 he joined the Adidas headquarters in Germany to lead the conceptual development of their high-end men’s performance. Coppens moved to New York in 2008 when Ralph Lauren recruited him as design director for RLX, which he helped transform into one of the most fashion forward concept brands within the line.

The Tim Coppens menswear line was launched in 2011 and can be characterized by graphic tailoring woven into classic pieces. He elegantly fuses functionality, derived from his technical-inspired background, within his designer pieces. The first fall 2011 collection was immediately picked up by Barneys.

His Belgian training as a classic fashion designer, and his exposure to the most innovative technical apparel make a unique combination that forms the foundation of Tim Coppens.

EAMES: The Architect and The Painter

The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America's most important designers. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life -- from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age -- has been less widely understood. Narrated by James Franco, Eames: The Architect and the Painter is the first film dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work.

official open for November 18 at the IFC Center in New York City, for more playdates go to First Run Features

LØV

LOV, the new autumn-winter 2011-2012 film directed by Stephanie Di Giusto.
After Lou Doillon, there is the appearance of a another heroine: Kate Bosworth. Her mysteriousness, her strength. Also another side to femininity, a stirring truthfulness which is renewed with every look, every movement accompanied by a wisp of assertiveness and purity. A new gracefulness progressing to a confident allure, conquering, a battling frailty.
It starts with an urban universe almost futuristic where this femininity comes up against angles, up against emptiness where lines are sought for and where poetry is found. A surrealistic dance, frantic and lively giving a light note to this ballad, this adventure which is perhaps the landscape of a soul.
Then the thread of the tale gets tenser. We come across a more solemn Kate, looking inwards, a mysterious warrior. Kate runs away, frightened by her dark double, perhaps her mirror reflection, perhaps her sister in dreams. White horses bolt with the music, liberating her wildness and the impatient purity of her energy, of her victory.
Euphoria of flight, of a grace released from the surface, from reality. Light headed. Kate is at the top of a tree of life giving herself up to an appeasing sun, to a sensual rapture winging towards the heart of the matter, streaming along, a reflection on the water.
In fact, a love story.

Everybody Street

During the early decades of the twentieth century, Alfred Stieglitz vividly captured the architecture and urban streetscapes of New York City. The first photographer to take the camera off the tripod, out of the studio, and into the streets, Stieglitz can be thought of as the father of New York City street photography - a genre that produced some of the most exciting and provocative images of the past fifty years.

Noted filmmaker and photographer Cheryl Dunn pays tribute to Stieglitz’s spirit through a unique and groundbreaking film that delivers an intimate portrait of some of the most important New York art photographers to emerge since the 1930’s. Her cinematic compilation includes interviews, photographs, and candid footage of the artists, exploring their lifelong dedication to New York as their photographic subject.

The Other F Word

"The Other F Word is a raucous, eye-opening, sad and unexpectedly wise look at veteran punk rockers as they adapt to the challenges of fatherhood. To be sure, watching foul- mouthed, colorfully inked musicians attempt to fit themselves into Ward Cleaver's smoking jacket provides for some consistently hilarious situational comedy, but the film's deeper delving into a whole generation of artists clumsily making amends for their own absentee parents could strike a resonant note with anyone (punk or not) who's stumbled headfirst into family life." - Andrew Barker, Variety

The Panda Rabbit is hybrid animal who is not liked by the normal pandas because he is different. The Avant/Garde Diaries: Michael Schmitz and The Zandmotor - Gone in 20 Years

Michael has realized his dream. He has become a pro surfer, something you wouldn’t probably expect to find in a country where most parts are below sea level. The Zandmotor is a building project to protect the land from the water. This “constructional master-piece” is truly unique as it has never been built in the world before. Furthermore it has another interesting effect that gains more and more attention in the surf community. The Zandmotor is the absolute best surf spot in Holland and probably one of the most unique places in Europe.

Power of Making

What do words like "craft" and "skill" mean in 2011? That is one of the questions that the exhibition ‘Power of Making’ seeks to answer. This film delves into the working lives of four makers: shoe designer Marloes ten Bhömer, crochetdermist Shauna Richardson, artist, curator and glass designer Matt Durran and flute-maker Stephen Wessel. It uncovers processes of thought and making that are as fascinating, complex and contemporary as the exhibition itself.

I Want Muscle

I want Muscle is a film that plays with taboos and gender stereotypes. It aims to explore a different kind of female beauty. It provides a glimpse into the world of Kizzy Vaines, a female bodybuilder. She is the only British competitor for the Olympia Fitness title in Las Vegas.

The visual aesthetic and soundtrack of the film are reminiscent of the glamour of the late 70s and early 80s, the golden age of female bodybuilding. It pays homage to the pioneering goddesses of the sport like Lisa Lyon and Rachel Mclish.

I wanted to shoot a muscle worship film but taken out of a fetish context. The idea was to break with traditional ideas of femininity in fashion and play with imagery that is conventionally perceived as glamourous, sexy, soft and feminine to then juxtaposed with displays of pure strength and shots of the grueling pain and discipline that is involved in achieving this type of physique.”

a new kind of beauty

I’m interested in what we define as beauty, when we choose to create it ourselves.
Beauty has always been a currency, and now that we finally have the technological means to mint our own, what choices do we make?
Is beauty informed by contemporary culture? By history? Or is it defined by the surgeon’s hand? Can we identify physical trends that vary from decade to decade, or is beauty timeless?
When we re-make ourselves, are we revealing our true character, or are we stripping away our very identity?
Perhaps we are creating a new kind of beauty. An amalgam of surgery, art, and popular culture? And if so, are the results the vanguard of human induced evolution?” - Phillip Toledano
